Staff Software Engineer
Job Description
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will ensure the technical success for an area, set architectural direction, and ensure the work of engineering teams moves in the right direction. You will identify and implement technical changes that have an area wide impact and help the software engineers within the area improve their craft and level up.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Sets architectural direction for their area and helps evolve systems toward it.
Identifies and implements new technologies or frameworks that improve productivity in their area.
Anticipates technical issues at the product level and makes architectural and design decisions to avoid them.
Breaks down complex projects into simple systems that can be effectively built and maintained by less experienced engineers.
Designs and implements systems and frameworks that can succeed long term.
Is considered an expert by peers and is recognized for high quality and quantity of hands-on technical contributions.
Mentors lead and other engineers on strategy, collaboration, influence, execution, and other aspects of leadership.
Uses negotiation and patience to collaborate with other senior leaders, ensuring progress and setting the example for others. They are capable of driving groups of disparate interests to decisions, and clearly communicating and seeing those decisions through to impact.
Collaborates across teams and disciplines to solve problems and resolve technical debates.
Stays aware of changes around the company to anticipate and prevent obstacles from hindering team performance.
Assists with quarterly rotation planning.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience & Education
The successful candidate will possess previous experience partnering and mentoring software development teams, analytical and critical thinking skills, and attention to detail. Additionally, the ideal candidate should possess the following:
8+ year’s application development experience in a professional environment.
Full stack experience with one or more technology stacks.
Experience identifying customer’s business needs and providing both technical and non-technical solutions.
Experience leading a team of other developers.
Experience reviewing code and making recommendations for improvement.
Experience with agile implementation methodologies.
Bonus points for:
Running a consulting company.
Experience in Machine Learning.
Experience with functional languages like Elm, Haskell, Ocaml, Elixir, or F#.
Previous Logistics Experience.
Skills & Abilities Required
An expert understanding of at least one customer segment, and an above average understanding of remaining customer segments.
Demonstrated success leading a diverse set of teams.
Has deep technical domain knowledge of their area.
Has strong ability to influence without requiring reporting authority.
